Academy of Design Australia

The Academy of Design Australia (formerly Australian Academy of Design) is a not-for-profit private school of design based in Port Melbourne. A Government-recognised Higher Education Provider (HEP), it is one of only two Australian higher education institutions to deliver a Bachelor of Design Arts,〔http://www.goingtouni.gov.au/CourseSearchResults.htm?courseName=design+arts&award=undergraduate&searchOption=findexact&courseType=both〕〔http://www.hotcourses.com.au/australia/all-cn-undergraduate-courses-australia/ug-aus-all/dl-cc/order-cd-1/design+arts/sf/courses.html〕 and offers major studies in Advertising, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Photo Media and Visual Arts.
== Background ==
The Academy was inaugurated by the Australian Academy of the Arts in 1998. The President of the Senate, its governing body, is Professor Daryl Le Grew (former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Tasmania). The Academy's Patrons are renowned Australian designer Ken Cato〔http://www.cato.com.au/#/aust/en/who/2〕 and barrister and human rights advocate Julian Burnside AO QC.
In 1999 the Academy was recognised by the Office of Training and Tertiary Education (OTTE) as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), and the following year it was included on the Commonwealth Register of Cultural Organisations.〔http://www.arts.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0018/81054/organisations-entered-on-roco-february-2010.pdf〕
Between 2001 and 2006, the Academy delivered undergraduate and postgraduate degrees through an affiliation with Charles Sturt University. After this it was registered as a Non-Self Accrediting Higher Education Institution, able to offer degrees in its own right. This coincided with the accreditation of the Bachelor of Design Arts, developed in association with the Australian Academy of the Arts, which is now offered exclusively by the Academy.
